Winter driving can be challenging, especially when temperatures drop and the roads get slick. So here are a few essential winter driving tips to help you stay prepared and protected all season long.
1. Slow Down and Give Yourself Extra Space
Cold weather affects traction, braking, and visibility. Snow, sleet, and black ice can turn a short stopping distance into a long slide. Always reduce your speed and leave more room between you and the car ahead. Even if you have all-wheel drive, physics still applies—your vehicle needs extra time to react on slippery roads.
2. Warm Up Your Vehicle the Smart Way
It’s tempting to crank up the heat and let your car idle, but today’s engines warm up best by driving gently after a minute or two. This helps protect your engine and gets heat flowing faster inside the cabin. Just clear all frost and snow from your windows, roof, and lights first—visibility is non-negotiable.
3. Check Your Tires Regularly
Cold air reduces tire pressure, which can affect handling and fuel efficiency. Keep an eye on your tire pressure light and check your PSI at least once a month. If your tires are worn or losing grip, winter tires can make an incredible difference.
4. Keep an Emergency Kit in the Car
